Patella Luxation is a dislocation of the knee cap (patella). This congenital condition affects mostly small breeds of dogs such as Miniature Poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, Boston Terriers, Miniature Pinschers and Miniature Schnauzers. The knee cap may dislocate toward the inside (medial) or outside (lateral) of the leg, or may move in both directions. It may result from injury or congenital (present at birth) deformities. Both legs are often affected. The symptoms of a luxating patella vary, depending on the severity and the duration of the luxation. Grades I and II cause off and on problems and Grades III and IV requires surgery in order to use the leg. Treatment consists of a 3-part surgical procedure that reshapes the knee cap groove, moves the knee cap tendon to a position that allows for normal walking and tightens the connective tissue wrapper of the knee joint. Having the surgery performed allows the dog to use the leg in a normal fashion. Dr. Jarrett usually recommends doing the worst knee first then evaluating the need for the other knee repair in 2-3 months. Pain involving Grades I and II can often be managed with the use of strong anti-inflammatory medications.
